A pair of vintage Angelus Company dressers walked into our shop looking like they belonged in a grandmother’s guest room — white French Provincial with gold trim, chipped and worn from decades of use. They walked out looking like they just came from a high-end furniture showroom.
This is what we do at Rahn’s. We don’t just refinish furniture — we reveal what’s been hiding underneath all along.
An Estate Sale Find with Serious Potential
The customer spotted this matching dresser and highboy at an estate sale. Most people would have walked right past them — two bulky, painted pieces that looked like relics from the 1970s. But this customer saw the bones: solid wood construction, ornate carved details, elegant French Provincial curves, and original brass hardware.
They had a vision: strip away the old white paint and bring out the natural beauty of the wood underneath. The question was — could it be done without destroying those intricate carvings and details?
That’s where we came in.
Before
How We Did It
Laser Stripping — No Chemicals, No Damage
Here’s the thing about stripping a white French Provincial finish: it’s stubborn. Multiple layers of paint, primer, and sealer — all baked on over decades. Chemical strippers would have been too aggressive on the detailed carvings and could have damaged the wood grain we were trying to reveal.
So we brought out the laser. Our laser stripping technology vaporizes the old finish layer by layer, leaving the bare wood completely intact. Every curve, every carved detail, every ornamental flourish — preserved perfectly.
Custom Stain Matching — The Customer Called the Shots
This is one of our favorite parts of any project. The customer came into the shop, and we mixed custom stains right in front of them — adjusting tone, depth, and warmth until we hit the exact color they’d been picturing. No guesswork. No surprises. They saw it happen in real time.
Professional-Grade Finish
Both pieces were sealed with Sherwin-Williams pre-catalyzed satin lacquer — the same finish used in high-end custom furniture shops. It gives a smooth, natural sheen that enhances the wood grain without looking plasticky, and it’s built to handle everyday use for years.
After
The Transformation
Look at those grain patterns. That warmth. That depth. All of that was hidden under white paint for decades.
What started as a pair of dated estate sale finds is now a stunning centerpiece set — and a conversation starter in the customer’s home. This is what 50+ years of furniture restoration expertise looks like.
