SOFA & COUCH REUPHOLSTERY

Couches, sofas, loveseats, sectionals, and settees — if it has a frame, cushions, and fabric, Rahn’s rebuilds it. Los Angeles and Orange County families have been bringing their sofas to our Santa Fe Springs shop since 1976. Three generations, one workshop, and a commitment to getting every stitch right. Pricing varies by project.
A quality sofa frame outlasts the cushions, fabric, and springs by decades. If your sofa was built with a solid hardwood frame — and most pre-2000 American-made sofas were — reupholstery is almost always more cost-effective than buying new, and the finished product will be built to a standard that mass-produced furniture cannot match.
THE HONEST ANSWER: HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Pricing varies by project. We do not publish flat rates because every sofa is different: size, fabric choice, foam density, structural damage, and styling details all drive cost. Here are some general ranges to set expectations — these are not quotes:
- Dining chair seat recover — lower end of the spectrum
- Simple sofa seat cushion recover — mid-range, depending on fabric
- Full sofa strip-to-frame rebuild — significant investment, but typically 40-60% less than comparable new high-quality furniture
- Fabric costs vary widely — basic upholstery fabric vs. designer fabric vs. top-grain leather can be a 3-5x difference
Free written estimates provided for every project. No work begins without your approval.
IS IT WORTH IT TO REUPHOLSTER A SOFA?
Reupholster If:
- Frame is solid hardwood (kiln-dried oak, maple, alder, birch)
- Eight-way hand-tied springs or sinuous springs in good condition
- Piece has sentimental, antique, or design value
- You want specific fabric or leather not available on new pieces
- Frame was built before ~2000 by a quality manufacturer
Replace If:
- Frame is particle board, MDF, or stapled softwood
- Frame is cracked and you can feel it flex when you sit
- The piece has no sentimental value and was purchased at a mass retailer
- Repair cost exceeds 70-80% of a genuinely comparable new piece

What “strip-to-frame” looks like: the sofa is taken down to bare wood, springs, and joints
WHAT “STRIP-TO-FRAME” REALLY MEANS
This is what separates a real reupholstery shop from a slip-cover-and-staple operation. When we do a full sofa reupholstery, it takes apart the piece down to raw wood and rebuilds every layer:
- Full Teardown — All fabric, foam, batting, dust cover removed
- Frame Inspection — Joints re-glued, dowels replaced, corner blocks reinforced
- Spring Work — Eight-way hand-tied springs re-tied or replaced. Sinuous springs re-clipped.
- New Webbing — Jute or polypropylene webbing re-strung across the seat and back deck
- Fresh Foam & Batting — New high-density foam (2.0+ lb density), Dacron wrap, cotton or polyester batting
- Seat & Arm Padding — Arm tops, fronts, and inside backs padded for shape and comfort
- Fabric Cut & Sewn — New fabric or leather pattern-cut, sewn, and fitted. Welting, tufting, and trim applied.
- Dust Cover & Finishing — New dust cover stapled to underside. Hardware reinstalled.

FABRIC GUIDE — WHAT TO CHOOSE
- Performance Upholstery — Crypton, Revolution, Sunbrella indoor. Stain-resistant, family-friendly, and durable. Best for everyday sofas.
- Velvet & Chenille — Luxurious hand-feel. Modern velvets are more durable than vintage. Good for low-traffic living rooms.
- Linen & Cotton — Natural fibers, relaxed look. Better with a protective treatment. Not ideal for homes with pets or kids.
- Leather — Full-grain, top-grain, or semi-aniline. The most durable option. Patinas beautifully with age.
- Outdoor / Marine — Sunbrella, marine vinyl. UV-resistant, water-resistant, mildew-resistant. Required for outdoor pieces.

SAVE MONEY WITHOUT GETTING RIPPED OFF
The sofa reupholstery industry in LA has a wide range of quality. Here are warning signs and how Rahn’s is different:
- Watch for “quotes without seeing the piece” — Any shop that quotes a fixed price over the phone without inspecting the frame and springs is either cutting corners or will surprise you with add-ons later. We provide free in-shop evaluations and free pickup.
- Beware of lowest-price shops — If the quote feels too good to be true, it probably skips structural work. A reupholstery that does not address a broken frame or collapsed springs will look good for 6 months and fail within 2 years.
- Ask about foam density — Cheap shops use 1.5 lb/ft3 foam. We use 2.0+ lb minimum. The difference is 3x the lifespan.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I text you a photo to get a rough estimate?
Yes. Text photos to our shop number. We can give a ballpark range from photos, but a final written estimate requires seeing the piece in person to evaluate the frame and springs. Free pickup available.
Is it worth reupholstering my old sofa?
If the frame is solid hardwood, almost certainly yes. Full reupholstery costs 40-60% less than comparable new high-quality furniture, and the frame is likely better than anything manufactured today at the same price point.
How long does sofa reupholstery take?
2-4 weeks for most sofas. Sectionals and complex projects may take 4-6 weeks. Rush service sometimes available. We provide a timeline with every estimate.
Can I bring my own fabric?
Yes, COM (Customer’s Own Material) is welcome. We will advise on suitability for your piece.
Do you pick up and deliver?
Yes — free pickup and delivery across all of Los Angeles and Orange County.
Do you reupholster outdoor furniture?
Yes. We use Sunbrella and marine-grade fabrics designed for outdoor exposure. UV-resistant foam and drainage grommets included.
