LEATHER FURNITURE REPAIR & RESTORATION

Leather furniture repair and dye application at Rahn's workshop

Cracks, tears, fading, pet damage, or a full re-hide — Rahn’s has been repairing and restoring leather furniture for Los Angeles and Orange County since 1976. Every piece is repaired in our Santa Fe Springs workshop. Pricing varies by project.

Over 50 years, we have handled every type of leather damage: sun-bleached aniline seats, cat-scratched cushions, wine-stained Italian sectionals, and dry-rotted vintage club chairs. Unlike mobile “touch-up” services that mask problems with surface dye, we address the structure of the hide — re-bonding delaminated layers, rebuilding lost pigment coats, and conditioning the leather so the repair stays soft and ages naturally.

We are one of the few full-spectrum shops in Southern California that handles both in-shop restoration and on-site work for pieces too large to transport, like built-in banquettes or commercial lobby furniture.

Our shop is open to walk-ins for free evaluations, and we provide free pickup and delivery across LA and Orange County. We are the approved vendor for major insurance carriers including AutoClub, State Farm, Allstate, Mercury, USAA, Chubb, and Safeco.

LEATHER SERVICES WE PERFORM

Color Restoration & Dye Matching

Hand-mixed dyes matched to the original finish. Protective, UV-resistant, and semi-aniline dyes used to restore color without masking the grain.

Crack, Scratch & Scuff Repair

Filler, fill, and airbrush. Covers abrasion and leather peeling, aging. Small scratches filled and re-pigmented, restoring the surrounding hide.

Tear, Rip & Puncture Repair

Sub-patch backing and flexible adhesive repair creates a hidden splice with a smooth appearance. Full stitching also available for structural tears.

Cushion Re-Hide & Panel Replacement

When a section is beyond repair, we source matching or complementary hides and replace individual panels, cushion covers, or arm caps.

Full Leather Reupholstery

Strip, reline, re-spring, new foam and new leather. The leather can be anything from Italian full-grain to a custom-selected top-grain hide.

Seat Repair & Re-Stuffing

Foam, Dacron, and spring replacement for collapsed seats. We restore the original profile and firmness.

Fade & Discoloration Repair

UV damage, body oils, and cleaning chemical reactions fade leather. We rebalance the color across the full surface.

Pet Damage & Claw Repair

Scratches, punctures, teeth marks, and urine staining. Our repair process addresses both the cosmetic and structural damage caused by pets.

Frame & Structural Rebuild Under Leather

Loose joints, cracked frames, broken webbing. We strip the leather, fix the frame, and re-upholster — often less than new retail.

Stain & Ink Removal

Pen, marker, dye transfer, food stains. Cleaned or re-pigmented based on the damage depth.

Patina & Wax Finish

For vintage and antique leather — gentle cleaning, museum-grade conditioner, and hand-waxed finish to preserve patina.

Mildew & Mold Remediation

Treated with antimicrobial solutions, deep cleaned, conditioned. Proper dehumidification advice included to prevent return.

Handle & Strap Covers

Replacement straps, buckles, footrest-grade closures. Proper-gauge hardware used.

Commercial & Hospitality

Restaurants, hotels, law offices, medical exam furniture, educational chairs. Reupholstery at a fraction of new; fast turnaround available.

LEATHER TYPES WE WORK ON

  • Top-Grain & Full-Grain — Premium hides, highest durability. Sofas, club chairs, Eames lounges, custom built-ins.
  • Aniline & Semi-Aniline — Soft, natural look, no heavy pigment coat. Dye-through coloring means scratches blend into the surface.
  • Pigmented & Protected — Most common on household sofas. Clear topcoat makes cleaning easy but can crack, peel, or yellow over time.
  • Bonded & Bicast — Bonded leather degrades predictably. We restore where possible. May recommend full re-hide if the substrate is failing.
  • Nubuck & Suede — Brushed surfaces require specialized solvent cleaning, re-napping, and careful color restoration.
  • Exotic Leathers — Ostrich, crocodile, snakeskin. We handle exotic skins with appropriate tools and adhesives.
  • Automotive & Aircraft — Classic car interiors, yacht seating. We work with automotive-grade hides and marine vinyl when needed.

WHAT LEATHER REPAIR COSTS IN LOS ANGELES

Pricing varies by project. There is no fixed fee for leather repair work — a scratch on a brownfield sofa and a full re-hide on a tufted Chesterfield are fundamentally different jobs.

Factors that affect pricing:

  • Damage extent and type — A 2-inch tear vs. full cushion replacement
  • Leather grade — Full-grain Italian hide costs more than bonded leather
  • Piece complexity — A straightforward dining chair vs. a tufted Chesterfield with nail-head trim
  • Small color touch-ups — Can start around $150-$250, depending on accessibility and matching difficulty
  • Panel replacement / reupholstery — Significant projects, driven heavily by leather selection, can range from $500+ depending on scope
  • Full leather reupholstery — Significant investment, driven primarily by the hide quality and piece size

We provide free written estimates. Come by the shop, send photos, or schedule a free pickup. Pricing varies by project — we will give you a clear, line-item quote before any work begins.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you handle leather for repairs, or do I need to replace the piece?

Most leather furniture can be restored to very close to its original condition through the proper repair techniques. Filler, sub-patching, re-dyeing, and reconditioning can fix most damage — from minor scuffs to significant tears. Replacement is usually only needed when the leather substrate itself has fully deteriorated (common in bonded leather).

How do you match the color?

We use hand-mixed dyes. We start with a base formula and test on a hidden section before applying to the visible surface. Semi-aniline and pigmented leathers allow near-exact matching. Full aniline matches are naturally less exact due to the dye-through nature of the hide.

Do you do mobile/on-site repairs?

Yes, for pieces that are built-in, oversized, or impractical to move. Our preference is in-shop repair for full environment control and lighting, but on-site work is available across LA and OC.

Can you fix leather cougar (cat) damage?

Yes — pet damage (claws, teeth, urine) is one of our most frequent jobs. Depending on severity, repair can range from surface re-pigmentation to full panel replacement. Most pet damage is fully repairable.

How long does leather repair take?

Most repairs take 5-10 business days from drop-off or pickup. More complex projects (full reupholstery, multiple pieces) can take 2-4 weeks. We provide a timeline with every estimate.

Can you repair a bonded leather that is flaking?

If the flaking is in small areas, we can repair the surface with filler and re-pigmentation. If the bonded coating is failing across the piece, a full re-hide may be more cost-effective.

Do you work with insurance carriers?

Yes. We are an approved vendor for AutoClub, State Farm, Allstate, Mercury, USAA, Chubb, and Safeco. We handle the documentation, photos, and estimates for insurance claims.

Can you make a dark color into a different color?

Sometimes — going lighter is much more difficult than going darker. We evaluate each piece. A dark brown can be taken to black easily, but a dark brown to cream requires a full strip-and-re-dye process that significantly increases cost.
